Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
