Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
