Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
