European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
