Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.

Police then discovered multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the residents for details.

A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him without words and required to be addressed quickly.

"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
