A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
